As I've said before, I am in almost the exact same situation, with almost the exact same choices. I'm a GA fan too, and Action 1 and GA GL 2 are both on the top of my list. Also, I too won Superman Archvies vol 1,2, and 3 on E-bay. I actually finished vol 2 last night. I didn't know there was continuity between the two. I may have get Action 1 next, though I have been dying for GA GL 2.

Well, whatever you do, make sure you use a coupon. Hey, ten bucks is ten bucks.

For what it's worth, Action vol.1 was the one of the three you're deciding among that I enjoyed reading the most.
It's the earliest, crudest Superman, and it has a life and vigor that disappears pretty quickly. I'd get that.

Action Comics vol.1 has been purchased! However, Amazon was selling it for the $50 price. :P Oh well, Amazon's loss was Mile High's gain! It just cost me $3 more for shipping than if Amazon had it's regular sale price.

Enjoy, Steve! I'm currently reading the Superman Archives in order. (Well, not issue-by-issue, but Archive-by-Archive. So I read Action #1, Superman #1, and Action #2. Next I'll probably do Superman #2-4, Action #3, and Superman #5.) I, too, enjoyed Action #1. Superman battles against social injustice even more than he battles super-villains, really. I recall one story -- I believe it was in Action #1, but it could've been Superman #1, I can't check right now -- that I got a kick out of wherein Superman decides that a slum in Metropolis has got to go. I won't spoil it for you except to say I liked it. (I'm not saying it's plausible at all, just that I liked it. ).

All-Star Comics # 5 was fine. It does feature a Brain Wave story I think.

Action Comics # 1 left me disappointed when I read it and I never bought it. (Yeah for libraries).

But Golden Age Green Lantern was terrific. The uneven art was no distraction to stories featuring a social crusader. The early GL stories also used his powers in a more interesting way IMO than many much later stories I have seen.

I especially loved reading Doiby Dickles' dialogue to my then-8 year old daughter. She giggled quite a bit. Fun was had by all.

If you DO buy GA GL # 2 after all, read it out loud. It's a hoot.

Action 1 is missing issue 2-7 which were later reprinted in issues of Superman (which means they were Archived earlier in Superman Archives).

At someone's request, I created instructions for reading these stories in the proper order. I think these instructions would drive most people crazy, but someone who reads several Archives at once is already jumping around and probably wouldn't go nuts.

Anyway, here it is.

1. Read Action 1 in Action Archive 1. Look at the cover to Action 2.
2. Go to Superman 1. Read the second story in Superman 1 (page 27-39). Skip the ad at the end.
3. Go back to Action to look at the cover of Action 3.
4. Go back to Superman and read the story beginning on page 43. Skip the filler at the end.
5. Go back to Action to look at the cover of Action 4.
6. Go back to Superman and read the story beginning on page 56. Skip the filler at the end.
7. Action: cover 5
8. Superman: story on 168. You guessed it, skip the filler.
9. Action: cover 6.
10. Superman: story on 180. Skip filler.
11. Finish the Action Archive. At some point, you might want to go back and read the text descriptions of Action 2-6.
12. Wait until your memory fades a little.
13. Read the entire contents of Superman Archive 1.

As far as I'mm concerened, the only other reason to jump around is to get the Luthor stories in order.

I don't want to exaggerate, but there is some continuity. When I first read these stories, there were references to stories that hadn't been Archived yet. I went crazy trying to figure out how I had forgotten these stories.

I'd have to re-read these stories to figure out the proper order. This is a long-term goal of mine, but I don't have the time now.

I THINK that this can be done without jumping between volumes. Just make sure that you read each volume of Action before any volume of Superman that overlaps with it. I don't want to ruin anyone's enjoyment, so I want to emphasize that this is what I THINK will work; this order is unverified.

Chris and Steve, enjoy!

Pretty good list. Here's some additional data and a slight reordering.

NYWF 1939 (#1) would have come out after Action #13 because of a two month lag between cover dates and onsale dates. Also Superman #1 contains an ad for Action #14 with an on sale date of June 2, 1939. It's possible NYWF #1 predates Act #13 by a few days but certainly not #12.

Here is a somewhat corrected ordering.

11) Action #11
12) Action #12
13) Action #13
14) NYWF #1 (on sale 4/30/39)
15) Superman #1 (on sale 5/18/39 - not sure where but I know I have seen this exact date somewhere)
16) Action #14 (on sale 6/2/39)

From there push each issue of Superman back one month.

Supes #2 between Act 16 & 17
Supes #3 between Act 19 & 20
Supes #4 between Act 22 & 23 (onsale 2/15/40 based on ad in Action #22) This is the real first appearance of Luthor since it predates Action #23, though Action #23 takes place chronologically first and is part 2 of a continued story.

NYWF 1940 (#2) between Act #25 & #26 (5/11/40)
Supes #5 also was released around this time. I place NYWF first. House ads show it arrived slightly before Act #26.

Thanks for the corrections! I noted my reasoning for many dates, but only have access to so many of the early house ads. As I noted, Action #1 was on the stands in May 1938 according to Siegel in his Fred Allen interview. The question is when did the change in shipping from 1 month, to 2 months prior to the cover date occur? I should have noticed it after I recently found out All-Star #3 arrived on stands Nov. 22, 1940 (according to a stamped date on one copy), and it's 2 page house ad shows January cover dated books.

Also, I'm constructing another list for Batman. Batman #1 went on sale April 25, 1940 according to an ad in Detective Comics #39, and if #3 was on sale in November, then wouldn't #2 have been on sale in July with September cover dated books? All these dates are giving me a headache!

One of my big projects right now is going through my various comics and noting exact onsale dates as listed in house ads. The project is nearly complete with only 1968-1975 left to cover. Obviously my Golden Age collection is less than complete. Here are some other early 1940 release dates that I have found.

With Sept/40 cover dates
Superman #6 - onsale 7/10/40
Batman #2 - onsale 7/20/40

With Dec/40 cover dates
Batman #3 - onsale 10/20/40

With Mar/41 cover dates
Batman #4 - onsale 1/13/41

With Apr/41 cover dates
All-Star #4 - onsale 2/7/41

With May/41 cover dates
Superman #10 - onsale 3/5/41
All-American #26 - onsale 3/18/41
Action #36 - onsale 3/21/41

With June/41 cover dates
All-Star #5 - onsale 4/25/41

With July/41 cover dates
World's Finest #2 - onsale 5/16/41
All-Flash #1 - onsale 5/25/41

With Sep/41 cover dates
Superman #12 - onsale 7/2/41

With Oct/41 cover dates
Star Spangled #1 - onsale 8/6/41
All-Star #7 - onsale 8/25/41

With Dec/41 cover dates
Batman #8 - onsale 10/10/41
All-Star #8 - onsale 10/25/41
